Cyclonic situation in the country remains stationary


Director General Department of Meteorology when contacted said that the cyclonic situation remains stationary to the East of Mullaitivu to Trincomalee coast. Still it is there.
When asked about any storm Mr. S.h. Kariwasam, Director General of the Meteological Department said that it want be a strong cyclone, but it is likely to be just marginal cyclone.
The deep depression in the Bay of Bengal is centered about 200 km east of Mullattivu coast in the morning today. It is likely to move Westward causing heavy showers and strong winds over most parts of the country and surrounding sea areas. It is expected to intensify further in to a marginal cyclone ( not severe ) and move over northern part of Sri Lanka tonight.
This system will be in the North and North central parts have so far got heavy rain and also the sea areas just East of Jaffna to Batticaloa off the coast will experience rough conditions and rain and so on.
When asked when the Depression in Bay Bengal is expected to cross Mr. Kariwasamhe said that during the past ten hours it is almost stationary and he said that the Department is watching about the changes going on and the depression is expected to move slowly.
Fishing and naval communities are requested to be vigilant about the strong winds, showery weather and rough seas in the sea areas off the coast from Mannar to Batticaloa via Jaffna and Trincomalee.
Shallow and deep sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Batticaloa via Jaffna and Trincomalee, will experience very rough conditions, strong winds and intermittent rain. . Most parts of the island will experience rainy conditions.
Strong winds and very heavy rain falls (more than 150 mm) will also occur in the Eastern, Northern, North- central and North -western provinces. Scattered heavy rain falls (more than 100 mm) are also expected elsewhere.
In the meantime when Asian Tribune contacted Mr. N. Vethanayakam, Government Agent of Mullaitivu, he said that the heavy winds have ceased, but the downpour continues.
