A top academic today urged the authorities to make a full evaluation on the health condition of the Sri Lankan maid who was allegedly tortured by her Saudi employer before engaging on a confrontational course with Riyadh as it could be harmful for the future interests of the country.
Professor Susirith Mendis-Vice Chancellor of the Ruhunu University said the maid- L. K. Dayawathie could possibly be suffering from the ‘Munchausen’s Syndrome’ and had self-inserted the nails into her body.
“However, this is only an assumption, but I would strongly advise for a thorough medical evaluation of the victim before confronting Riyadh in any manner,” he said.
He added that the medical investigations carried out on the maid to date were in adequate to come to any conclusion and therefore the matter should be investigated further.
“It is also possible that she may have been tortured in some other manner, and had pierced her self with nails out of anger and sheer frustration.
“Any thing could have taken place, and if we do not act wisely there could be adverse results, which could even lead to the loss of jobs in Saudi Arabia owing to the fear psychosis that has been created by all this,” Professor Mendis said.
The maid has repeatedly claimed that her Saudi employer had inserted some 27 nails and pins into her body during her four months of employment in that country prompting the matter to be taken up at the highest diplomatic levels between the two countries.
The Saudi authorities have already denied the allegations.
